Google is finally addressing Calendar invite spam

If you’re a user of Google products you’ve probably heard about the recent spam outbreak in Google Calendar. The design flaw has been around for a while, but just recently it started getting exploited and showing up for a majority of users. Google is finally addressing this issue and they are working on a fix.

If you haven’t experience the issue, it’s pretty simple. An email containing an invite is sent to a user (usually going straight to the Spam folder). The event, containing spam links and other dubious info, is then automatically added to the user’s calendar. The event is usually set to be recurring and will show up every single day on the calendar. Needless to say, this is a pretty glaring design flaw and very annoying.

Google says: “We’re aware of the spam occurring in Calendar and are working diligently to resolve this issue.” If you don’t feel like waiting around for Google to fix the issue, there are some steps you can take yourself.

First:

1. Open Calendar on the web and go to Settings
2. Select “Event Settings” in the menu
3. Click on the “Automatically add invitations” dropdown
4. Select “No, only show invitations to which I have responded”

Next:

1. Still on the Settings page, select “Events from Gmail” in the menu
2. Uncheck “Automatically add events from Gmail to my calendar”
3. Click “Okay” on the warning that pops up

These instructions will ensure you’re not affected by the design flaw until Google issues a fix, which hopefully doesn’t take long. Has this Calendar spam happened to you yet?
