Google Assistant has become the virtual assistant of choice for many Android users, partly due to its impressive capabilities and also partly because of the fact that it comes preloaded as part of Google’s app suite. At IFA 2019, Google is blessing Assistant with the ability to turn Android devices into smart displays through Ambient Mode.
Google Assistant’s Ambient Mode will turn Android devices into smart displays for a better hands-off experience. Current generation smartphones and tablets are powerful in terms of their computational abilities, while smart displays are much more dumbed-down and limited in their operation, but benefit a lot from a more instructional, voice-based interaction model and a different visual overview. When supported smartphones and tablets are docked and charging, Assistant will now show information from calendar, weather, notifications, reminders, music controls and smart home controls. Assistant will also turn the device into a digital photo frame that will pull images from your Google Photos account.
Ambient Mode on Google Assistant will be available on the Lenovo Smart Tab M8 HD and Lenovo Yoga Smart Tab tablets when they are docked, and on the Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2 smartphones when they are charging. It is currently unknown whether Ambient Mode will be rolling out to other Android smartphones, but we bet that it will. The upcoming Google Pixel 4 appears to be the perfect candidate for Google to release further Assistant based functionality and we were a little surprised to see the new Nokia releases be the first one to receive this feature.
Google also took the opportunity to announce that Google Assistant will be available on even more devices, including more headphones from JBL, Bose, Sony; speakers from Bose, Sonos and JBL and soundbars from JBL, Philips and others. Assistant is now available in more than 30 languages and 80 countries and all of these new devices, so you are sure to find this virtual assistant be present everywhere.
