Verizon’s free anti-robocalling service is now rolling out

Update (8/27/19 @ 4:05 PM ET): Verizon will opt-in customers with certain Android devices to spam call filtering by default.

Thankfully, robocalls aren’t as frequent in Europe as they’re in the US. According to the statistics from YouMail, nearly 48 billion robocalls were made in 2018 only in the US. Over 37% of these calls were spam calls. Many of the tech companies are trying their best to avoid or completely block most of these calls so that you don’t get bothered by them. For example, Google’s screen calling lets you identify spam callers by making Google Assistant talk to them. Now, Verizon is taking it upon themselves to stop robocalls once and for all.

Call Filter is now rolling out to all Verizon users for free. The free version of the application will let you detect spam and report the number. There is also a paid version available for $2.99/month per line, which includes features like personal spam and block list, risk meter, and spam lookup. Probably the most important one is the Caller ID, which identifies the caller based on the information they put into the application. You can also set up your profile so next time you call someone who has the paid version of Call Filter, they’ll be able to easily identify you. Caller ID also lets you add the identified number to the contacts easily.

I’m sure most of the users will stick with the free users as it can do the basic job it’s designed for – it blocks robocalls. You can open the Call Filter Free application on your Verizon-enabled devices and start using the feature already. Some users reported that they’re having problems with number verification. If you encounter this issue, all you can do is wait. Call Filter is available on both iOS and Android.

Update: Verizon will automatically opt-in customers

Starting today, some Android users on Verizon will be opted-in to robocalling/spam filtering by default. The list of phones is pretty extensive, but it’s not all Android phones. The feature will be rolled out in a staggered fashion with new devices being added each week. Samsung devices are first on the update timeline. The full list of Android phones is below.
