5G is coming, although it’s going to be a long time until it’s as ubiquitous as LTE is. However, US carrier Sprint has just announced that their fourth 5G-enabled smartphone will be from OnePlus. The previous three devices were the LG V50, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, and the HTC 5G Hub. Sprint 5G is currently available in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Kansas City, and the company expects to launch its 5G service in areas of Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix and Washington, D.C. soon.
OnePlus currently only produces one 5G smartphone, and it’s the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, which is sold in the United Kingdom. Sprint’s 5G network will differ from existing carrier solutions however, as their network is sub-6GHz rather than mmWave like Verizon and T-Mobile. mmWave is faster, though has a shorter range and requires more towers for ample coverage. Sprint’s 5G doesn’t offer gigabit speeds, but you should notice greater consistency in connection quality along with a better coverage area. This marks the second carrier partnership that OnePlus has accrued in the United States, giving them an even larger potential customer base in the country than before.
“We value OnePlus’ reputation for balancing high-end quality at a great value,” said Dow Draper, Sprint chief commercial officer. “This new smartphone gives Sprint customers another exciting option for accessing their True Mobile 5G experience.”
“We are proud to join with Sprint to bring an ultra-premium smartphone to their network,” said Kyle Kiang, OnePlus chief marketing officer. “As a community-driven company, we are thrilled to tell OnePlus enthusiasts on the Sprint network that the wait is finally over. This is a tremendous opportunity to expose Sprint customers to the award-winning OnePlus brand.”
Device specifications, pricing, and exact timing will all be announced soon, though it’s more than likely going to be the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G.
