[Update: Delayed Again] Huawei Mate X foldable phone reportedly delayed until September

Update (8/15/19 @ 11:00 AM ET): The Huawei Mate X foldable phone has been delayed yet again.

Foldable phones were the hot new thing just a couple of months ago, but the Samsung Galaxy Fold situation has put a damper on things. The other main contender in this space, the Huawei Mate X, has waited while Huawei deals with their own problems. The phone was originally slated for a June launch, but it has reportedly been delayed.

The Huawei Mate X was the yin to Samsung’s yang in the foldable phone market. While the Galaxy Fold’s display is kept on the inside when folded, the Mate X’s display wraps around the outside. This allows the device to seem more like a normal smartphone when folded, and not having a small, secondary display on the outside. Many people were even more excited about Huawei’s design, though it does pose its own array of durability issues.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the Huawei Mate X launch is being delayed until September. Vincent Peng, a senior VP at Huawei, says the company is delaying the device to improve the quality of the screen. Peng says “We’re doing a lot of tests,” and they are trying to release the phone “as early as we can.”

People will, unsurprisingly, assume this has something to do with Huawei being put on the US export blacklist. However, Peng says the supply chain issues are not behind the delay, but the company is in talks about whether the device will launch with Google’s suite of Android apps.

Update: Delayed Again

Previously delayed until September, the Huawei Mate X is “unlikely to come out before November.” The Mate X was originally going to come out after the Samsung Galaxy Fold, but the Fold ended up getting indefinitely delayed, opening the door for the Mate X to be the first foldable phone on the market. However, now the Galaxy Fold is being re-launched next month and the Mate X is being pushed back again. The reason behind the delay was not shared, but the company is still positive the phone will launch before the end of the year.
