Motorola’s latest addition to the “One” series is official. After a launch date was rumored last week, the company officially announced the Motorola One Action today. As the name implies, this is a phone with a focus on “action.” One of the areas where that is most noticeable is the 3rd camera, which features a GoPro-like wide-angle lens that can shoot horizontal video in portrait orientation.
Most of the Motorola One Action is typical for a mid-range device. It has a 6.3-inch FHD+ display with 21:9 aspect ratio, Samsung Exynos 9609 processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, 3,500mAh battery, 3.5mm headphone jack and Android Pie (Android One outside of North America). The camera, or rather cameras, is where the One Action sets itself apart.
First, the not so exciting: the hole-punch on the front is for a 12MP selfie camera. The rear of the Motorola One Action houses three cameras: 12MP, 5MP, and 16MP. The 12MP rear camera is considered the “main” camera and it’s pretty ordinary. The 5MP camera is for depth-sensing to aid portrait photos. The real action is happening with the 16MP camera, which has a 117-degree field-of-view.
Not only does the third camera have a wide field-of-view, but Motorola has added some extra features to make it more like a GoPro. First of all, the sensor is rotated, so when you hold the phone in portrait orientation it records horizontal video. That means you can easily hold the phone in one hand and still take nice widescreen videos. Motorola is also including software to improve action videos. “Enhanced Video Stabilization” reduces shakiness while recording. It also should be noted that the third camera is exclusively for video.
The Motorola One Action is available today in Brazil, Mexico, and select European countries. The phone will be coming to North American in early October. It’s available in Denim Blue and Pearl White for €259 (about $290).
