LineageOS 16 now available for the Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 and Galaxy A7 2017

The Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 and the Samsung Galaxy A7 2017 are remnants of Samsung’s rather confusing budget and mid-range device lineup from 2017. These existed before the Galaxy A-series absorbed the Galaxy J-series and On-series. The Galaxy A5 2017 and the Galaxy A7 2017 shared practically all specifications between them, with the only differences being the larger display on the A7, and as a consequence, a larger body and a larger battery. Both the devices have received official LineageOS 14.1 in the past, and now, these have been bumped up to official LineageOS 16 as well.

LineageOS 16 is good news for both these devices, as they are long past their point of prime performance. They are also unlikely to receive any further attention from Samsung as well, and the last official update for the devices left them at Android 8.0 Oreo. To Samsung’s fair credit, the phones did start off with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and since they were mid-range devices at best, we appreciate the support that they have received from the company. With LineageOS though, the Galaxy A5 2017 (a5y17lte) and the Galaxy A7 2017 (a7y17lte) will continue to receive steady security patches and a cleaner version of Android, for at least as long as official support persists. Both the phones are also officially supported by TWRP, so the developer community will likely keep adding on life and utility to these mid-rangers from 2017. This just goes on to show how important developer support is for the longevity of a phone.
