LG G8X leak shows that LG is still sticking with the headphone jack

LG’s smartphone business is far from flourishing. The company announced a 21% dip YoY in its smartphone business during the earnings call for the second quarter of 2019. However, LG does not seem to be giving up and has been banking on 5G to bounce back from tough times. Meanwhile, is is likely to be preparing to showcase some new devices, including the LG V50 with its dual-screen attachment and an iteration to the previously launched LG G8 ThinQ, at IFA 2018. Following the earlier “LG G8X” name-drop by the company itself, we now have high quality renders of the smartphone, thanks to the routine leaker Steve H.McFly aka @OnLeaks.

Along with Pricebaba, OnLeaks shares a preview of what the LG G8X might look like. This report comes a few days after Dutch publication AndroidWorld indicated that LG mentions that an unknown device – the LG G8X – will be available in the Western European region of Benelux starting this fall in their IFA 2019 invite.

The design of the purported LG G8X can be seen to have a noticeable upgrade over the LG G8 ThinQ, which was launched earlier this year at the MWC 2019. While the LG G8 ThinQ felt like a refurbished G7 ThinQ, the supposed G8X is an interesting upgrade. Firstly, the LG G8X now has a waterdrop notch instead of the broader notch on the G8 ThinQ and the display measures 6.2 inches diagonally (6.35″ if rectangular corners are taken into considerations instead of the rounded ones).

The back on the LG G8X is expected to retain the same glass design as well as the horizontal orientation of the double cameras. There is, however, no visible fingerprint scanner on the back, prompting us to think that LG may adopt an in-display fingerprint with this device. This also suggests that LG may be using an OLED display on the smartphone.

The volume up and down keys are located on the left of the LG G8X while the power button sits on the right side. There’s another button below the volume controls and this is likely to be a trigger for the Google Assistant. The USB-C port, the headphone jack, and the mono speaker are placed on the bottom of the smartphone while the top is where the SIM tray is placed. Additionally, the earpiece visible above the screen hints that LG may not be using the Crystal Sound OLED speaker technology which vibrates the upper half of the screen as a substitute.

While details about the internal specifications are unavailable at the moment, the LG G8X is likely to succeed the LG G8 and could, thus, be powered by a Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC. The smartphone is expected to be exhibited at IFA 2019, which starts on August 31st. In the meantime, we’ll update you with any information we come across about the expected smartphone.
