The smartphone market globally has been on a decline, but analysts and other stakeholders in the phone business are banking on the rollout of 5G services to expand the market once again. 5G will gradually make its way across the world in the same manner as 4G did, which means that we are going to see a lot of hyped 5G releases from phone manufacturers and telecoms alike. Chinese telecom operator China Unicom took to Weibo to talk about its 5G plans, and in the process, the carrier has confirmed the existence of several rumored 5G devices like a new Xiaomi 5G phone, the Samsung Galaxy A90 5G, and the Huawei Mate 30 5G.
China Unicom’s 5G plans are riding on the release of the Huawei Mate 20 X (5G) which will be launched in China on August 16. This will be Huawei’s first 5G phone, although the device is not very different in terms of core specifications from the Mate 20 X, other than 5G-related hardware. Other phone releases for the carrier on its network for August include the ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G, the Vivo iQOO Pro 5G, Vivo NEX 5G, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. Things start getting more interesting for September 2019, as the carrier has announced that phones like a “Xiaomi 5G model”, the Huawei Mate 30 5G, the Samsung Galaxy A90 5G, and the Vivo X series will be released on its network.
This is the first official confirmation about the existence of several of the above-mentioned phones, as most of them have just been rumored so far. For instance, the unspecified Xiaomi 5G phone could either be a 5G variant of the Mi 9 or it could be the Mi MIX 4 as well, though the timeline mentioned does not align well for the release of the Mi Mix 4. Similarly, a 5G variant of Huawei’s upcoming flagship sounds like a no-brainer, but there hadn’t been any confirmations on the same so far by any credible source. On the other hand, a 5G smartphone within the Samsung Galaxy A-series is surprising.
Most of these phone releases are spoken within the context of a launch in China. Based on previous patterns, we should see at least some of these make their way to international markets.
