Earlier this month, Xiaomi unveiled a new line of smartphones centered around their cameras: the CC9e, CC9, and CC9 Meitu Edition. The former was rebranded internationally as the Xiaomi Mi A3 while the latter two have yet to leave China. People are hoping that the CC9 or CC9 Meitu Edition will be rebranded as a “Pro” model of the Mi A3, but there’s so far no evidence of that happening. In any case, Xiaomi has released the kernel source code for the CC9 and Meitu Edition, so developers can start working on porting TWRP, building custom kernels, and properly porting AOSP.
The kernel source code is available on Xiaomi’s GitHub under the pyxis-p-oss tree. This is a shared tree for the CC9 (code-named “pyxis”) and the Meitu Edition model (code-named “vela.”) Both devices are fairly similar to one another in that they both have 6.39″ FHD+ AMOLED displays, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC, optical under-display fingerprint scanners, 32MP front-facing selfie cameras, and 48MP main + 8 MP wide + 2MP depth triple rear cameras, but the Meitu Edition gets a slight upgrade in RAM and onboard storage to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage respectively. We’re hoping that one of these two gets launched as an Android One phone outside of China, because it doesn’t look like users online are very happy with the Mi A3.
