[Update 3: UK Launch] The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G has a smaller 4200mAh battery but faster 40W charging

Update 3 (7/25/19 @ 2:20 PM ET): The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is finally launching in the UK tomorrow.

Update 2 (7/11/19 @ 3:50 PM ET): Huawei has confirmed the Mate 20 X 5G will be the company’s first 5G device to launch and it’s coming this month.

Update 1 (5/17/19 @ 10:09 AM ET): The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is finally getting a launch date in the UK. Launch details below.

The race for 5G is on. As 5G connectivity is slowly becoming available for consumers, several OEMs are also launching their own 5G-compatible devices. Samsung, for example, is ready to launch their Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, a special variant of their Galaxy S10 smartphone which includes better cameras, a bigger display, and, of course, 5G support. Meanwhile, LG has also announced the LG V50 ThinQ with support for 5G connectivity. OnePlus, OPPO, Lenovo, and ZTE are also preparing 5G devices. Of course, Chinese giant Huawei is also joining this bandwagon, but with two new devices to their name.

We know that the Huawei Mate X, their foldable phone offering, will be coming with support for 5G, but Huawei is also preparing something for those who might prefer a more classic form factor: a Huawei Mate 20 X 5G. The device is confirmed to launch on China Unicom soon, though its exact pricing and availability has not been unveiled. More interestingly, the device also packs some more hardware changes apart from the obvious modem differences. The 5G Huawei Mate 20 X has already appeared in a hands-on video from YouTube channel Zing Gadget (via GSMArena), showing off its main specifications.

The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G has the same 7.2″ Samsung OLED display, the same triple rear camera setup (meaning, it’s the same as the Huawei Mate 20 Pro), the same exterior design, the same ports, the same Kirin 980 SoC, the same fingerprint scanner, and more. With the inclusion of Huawei’s Balong 5000 5G modem, some additional space was needed to make room for the new modem and antennas. The battery is now smaller when compared to the 5,000 mAh cell included in the 4G Mate 20 X—it’s now a smaller 4,200 mAh battery. To make up for this deficit, however, the 5G model also adds support for 40W SuperCharge 2.0 support. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Porsche Design Huawei Mate 20 RS, Honor Magic 2, and Huawei P30 Pro are the only other Huawei and Honor-branded devices with 40W fast charging.

Huawei Mate 20 X Forums

Huawei’s gargantuan Mate 20 X is quite an interesting device, and while the 4G model is available internationally, we aren’t sure if the 5G model will be. We’ll have to wait and see if the 5G model makes its way outside of China alongside the foldable Huawei Mate X.

Update 1: Launches in the UK

Earlier this month, the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G launched in Switzerland. Today, the company has shared details for the device’s launch in the UK. The Mate 20 X 5G will be available on EE, O², Three, and Vodaphone in June for £999 (which is oddly much more than the £755 price in Switzerland).

Update 2: New Launch Details

The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G and Mate X launches have been a bit of a whirlwind. The devices were announced alongside each other as the company’s first 5G devices. The Mate X was supposed to launch first until it was delayed. As the previous update to this article mentioned, the Mate 20 X 5G was supposed to launch in the UK last month. This was after it went up for pre-order in Switzerland. However, later in May, the Mate 20 X 5G was delayed and other planned 5G devices went ahead with launch. Phew.

Huawei has confirmed to VentureBeat that the Mate 20 X 5G will be launching in multiple countries throughout July. The countries that previously offered the device on pre-order have remained in pre-order status all this time. Etisalat will offer the device on July 12th for $959. In Italy, the devices are on pre-order from Amazon for $1,238 (shipping July 22), and China will get the phone on July 26th. Expect it to launch in more countries this month.

Update 3: UK Launch

The roller coaster ride that has been the launch of the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is finally coming to an end. After missing it’s initial UK launch date in June, the device is finally launching tomorrow (July 26th). This is Huawei’s first 5G device release. It will be available from Three, Sky Mobile, and Carphone Warehouse, and it will also work on EE and Vodaphone. The phone costs 1,000 GBP ($1,250) and comes in the emerald green color.

Note: Huawei has stopped providing official bootloader unlock codes for its devices. Therefore, the bootloaders of their devices cannot be unlocked, which means that users cannot root or install custom ROMs.
