Nokia 9 PureView gets a new Live Bokeh camera mode with July 2019 security patch update

The Nokia 9 PureView is the first-of-a-kind smartphone by HMD Global, featuring five different camera sensors with special Google Photos integration to boot. It’s one of the most comprehensive Android smartphones when it comes to photography, though that’s not to say it’s the best. HMD Global has continued to improve the device with software updates, and being a part of the Android One program means that it gets security patches relatively quickly when compared to some smartphone manufacturers. The July 2019 security patch update has brought a Live Bokeh camera mode, along with faster image processing and a faster fingerprint sensor. The V4.27C update comes in at around 280MB.

Live Bokeh certainly has its uses. Bokeh shots are the ones where behind the subject is blurred, and previously you had to take the photo to see the results, which can take a lot of time. Now you can see how the shot will look in your viewfinder, saving you time from having to take the photo, check the results, and potentially take it again. If you take a lot of Bokeh shots, you might find it useful. If you don’t use Bokeh much, you might prefer the faster fingerprint unlocking or the faster image processing. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 in the Nokia 9 PureView sometimes struggles to take photos quickly using the phone’s 5 cameras, so hopefully, this update helps.

The update is slowly rolling out globally, and users on our forums from all over the world are reportedly getting it. Companies tend to roll updates out slowly, so that if there’s a problem then the update can be canceled before it reaches too many people. HMD Global will especially be careful, given that they have been burned by that before. If you haven’t gotten it yet, you’re best off just waiting it out.
