When you ask people to list some popular streaming TV and movie services we almost always see Hulu in the mix. At the start of 2019, the company boasted about surpassing the 25 million subscriber milestone. That number still trails Netflix’s numbers by a lot, but any streaming service with 25 million paying subscribers is nothing to scoff at. It has been a long time since its Android TV application received an update, but those who use the service on an Android TV box should look forward to a new update headed your way.
It seems as if it has been forever since the Hulu application has received an update. The company’s ownership has been divided among multiple companies, which hasn’t helped development, but that changed recently when Disney acquired a big chunk of Fox. The new update isn’t out quite yet, but the company does say that Android TV owners should look forward to it landing on their device sometime in “early August.” There are two big changes happening in this update with one coming in the form of an updated user interface.
Sadly, they didn’t go into any details at all when it comes to this new UI but did specifically mention the update is coming to Sony’s Android TVs, the NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV, the Xiaomi Mi Box, and Hisense Android TVs. It’s actually the other big change in this update that has received more attention in the official Hulu blog post. Otherwise known as “Hulu + Live TV,” the feature is finally making its way to the Android TV platform. Those who are unaware should know that this package is more than just the regular streaming subscription.
Hulu + Live TV’s core bundle will cost you $45/month (up from $40 back in November) and includes 60+ channels (depending on where you live). The live TV plan is a lot like YouTube TV. Hulu also offers premium add-on channel bundles including HBO, Showtime, Starz, and more. Until this update, Hulu customers with an Android TV device did not have access to this Live TV service from the platform. Thankfully though, this is changing with the new update scheduled for release early next month.
