Pre-release leaks of last year’s Google flagship, the Google Pixel 3, brutally savaged all excitement we would usually have from a premium smartphone. To avoid this from happening this year, Google willingly shared a peek at the Pixel 4’s rear camera module. The camera module, which carries the legacy for emoji resemblance in their design from last year with an amazed-face Pixel 4’s rear camera setup, took us by a pleasant surprise. This is because until now, Google has been challenging other flagships with just a single camera and that is set to change with the Pixel 4 duo.
Prominent leaker @OnLeaks has kicked off the week with an exhilarating surprise by sharing a 360º overview of the Pixel 4 XL with super high quality renders in partnership with Pricebaba.
The Google Pixel 4 looks like a Pixel 3 from the front with an obtrusive forehead in place of the awkward notch on the Pixel 3 XL. The earpiece lies in the center of this forehead while the dual cameras are placed on the side along with a cutout for an unknown sensor. We suspect these might be for an infrared-based time of flight camera for facial identification, similar to Face ID on the iPhone.
XDA Developers‘ Editor-in-Chief Mishaal Rahman first found out about Google’s plans to work on a Face ID-like feature on Android Q back in January, which was further proofed by his discovery of the mysterious “IR” camera in the leaked Google Camera 6.3 app last week. In the meantime, Face Authentication popped up in the Android Q Beta 4, so we strongly believe that Google should finally add a dedicated face unlocking sensor.
In the teaser shared by Google, there was no fingerprint scanner on the back and this inspires us to believe that either the tech giant is looking to add in-display fingerprint scanner or rely solely on the IR camera for biometrics. This has further been confirmed by these renders. The back seems to be entirely reflective this time instead of the dual pattern we’ve seen on the Pixel 3 devices with no line to divide the back into two portions. As for the camera module on the back, there are two different cameras and as Mishaal revealed earlier, there is a good chance that one of these cameras is a telephoto lens. Although the Google Camera 6.3 code does not talk about a third sensor on the back, we see one in the renders. We’re not sure what the sensor on the top and this may either be a depth sensor or a flicker sensor that we also saw on the Pixel 3/3 XL. Meanwhile, along the same line as this unknown sensor, below the primary and the supposedly telephoto lens, in a dual-LED flash.

The bezels around the three edges – save the forehead – of the display are thin and make the Pixel 4 XL look premium. This display is likely to measure nearly 6.25-inch diagonally and can be expected to have a Quad HD resolution. Further, Google has moved the front-facing speaker in the chin to the bottom of the smartphone, just like the Pixel 3a. We don’t know if the earpiece works as one of the speakers or if the two speaker grilles at the bottom bear a stereo sound setup.
Lastly, the Pixel 4 XL is expected to measure 160.4 x 75.2 x 8.2mm, which is only slightly bigger than the Pixel 3 XL, while the camera bump adds another millimeter to the thickness of the device.
