Back in May, during Google I/O 2019, the company announced that Android Q’s beta versions would be available for 21 non-Pixel devices. OnePlus is one of the OEMs who started pushing out developer previews of the upcoming version of Android. The company released what they call “DP3” just a couple of days ago. It brought features like Game Space, which is a reimagined game mode, more customization options, updated ambient display, screen recorder, and more. Today we found two new features from the build, which is available for OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T, OnePlus 7, and OnePlus 7 Pro devices.
The first feature is dubbed “Raise to Switch.” I think we’ve all had a moment when we left our headsets connected to the phone via Bluetooth and tried to answer a call via the phone’s speaker. It’s a clumsy experience to tap on the devices button and switch the output from here. So, starting with Android Q DP3 on OnePlus devices, you can simply raise the phone to your ear and it will automatically switch from the connected device to phone’s speaker.
The next feature is “Intelligent Control.” Android 6.0 Marshmallow introduced battery optimization features, which can be turned on or off by per-app basis. Battery optimization integrates Doze and other battery-saving features. Traditionally, you could leave them turned on by default or disable them altogether. Now, OnePlus is bringing a feature which stands in the middle. Intelligent Control will automatically enable and disable battery optimization based on how you use your device and how the apps behave on it.
Our own Max Weinbach tested the update on a few OnePlus devices and he doesn’t recommend installing it on OnePlus 6/6T. Though, if you’re willing to risk the stability or want to test Android Q DP3 on OnePlus7 or OnePlus 7 Pro, you can see a thread with download links and instructions here.
