Last year, OnePlus updated their charging tech with Warp Charge 30 on the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition. They equipped the OnePlus 7 Pro with this same tech, which means many more people have it in their hands now. There are several other popular charging technologies in use by competing smartphones, such as SuperVOOC 3.0, SuperCharge 2.0, and USB-PD. XDA TV‘s Daniel Marchena put these standards to the test.
Here are the contenders:
- OnePlus 7 Pro: Warp Charge 30, 4,000 mAh battery
- Oppo Reno 10x Zoom: SuperVOOC 3.0, 4,000 mAh battery
- Huawei P30 Pro: SuperCharge 2.0, 4,200 mAh
- Pixel 3: USB-PD, 2,915 mAh
Daniel runs the devices through a number of tests to record the charging speeds. First, he performs a quick 15-minute “top-up.” This is important for those times when you need a little extra juice in a pinch. The Huawei P30 Pro won this test with 26% in 15 minutes while the Reno 10x Zoom came in last with only 11%. In terms of actual usage time, however, the Pixel 3 came in last with only about 3.5 hours.
The next test bumps the charging time up to 30 minutes. The P30 Pro gained nearly 60% in those 30 minutes, while the Reno 10x Zoom (SuperVOOC 3.0) came in second with 40%, the OnePlus 7 Pro (Warp Charge 30) climbed 33%, and the Pixel 3 only got 23%. Factoring in usage time, you can get 23 hours (basically a full day) of battery life from just 30 minutes of charging on the P30 Pro. The Pixel 3, by comparison, will only get you 5 hours.
Lastly, Daniel performed a 0-100 charging sprint test. The Huawei P30 Pro once again took the crown by fully charging in 58 minutes. The Reno 10x Zoom (SuperVOOC 3.0) and OnePlus 7 Pro (Warp Charge 30) were able to be fully juiced up in 1 hour and 20 minutes. The Pixel 3 needed 1 hour and 50 minutes for a full battery.
The Huawei P30 Pro and SuperCharge 2.0 would seem to be the clear winner after all these tests, but fast charging doesn’t come without costs. Daniel also measured temperature while charging and the P30 Pro saw the biggest peak with a 13-degree Celsius increase over the starting temperature. The device also stayed hotter for longer than the other devices. This could be bad for the long-term health of the battery.
So which charging tech do you think is the best? Warp Charge 30 and SuperVOOC 3.0 are almost as fast as Huawei’s SuperCharge 2.0 without the temperature problems. USB-PD is clearly inferior to the other three. Be sure to watch Daniel’s full video above to see the full results.
