[Update: Now In Public Beta] WhatsApp beta 2.19.151 for Android preps QR code and Facebook Stories sharing

Update (6/26/19 @ 4:05 PM ET): The Facebook Story sharing feature is now available in the WhatsApp Public Beta.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world. It has every feature you may need in a messaging app, like group chat support, statuses, and more. Ever since Facebook acquired the startup, we’ve been seeing tighter integrations of these two services. A social media giant has been trying to unify the experience between its services for a long time. A new unreleased feature suggests that they’re still continuing to do so.

WABetaInfo published an article that uncovers two new WhatsApp features. The first one lets you share your WhatsApp status as a Facebook story. Stories are the most popular thing in social media right now. Literally every big company, including Google, Facebook and Snap use them in their applications. The publication mentions that the “Add to Facebook Story” button will only appear if the Facebook application is installed on the device. You can see the screenshot of the feature below.

The next yet unreleased feature is the profile QR Codes. Snapchat and Messenger have been using similar identification methods for quite a while, and it looks like WhatsApp is joining the party too. Once the feature becomes available, you will be able to navigate to your profile, show someone the QR code and your phone number which is associated with your WhatsApp account. This will allow you to exchange contact details easily between friends. If you shared your QR Code on social media and are now tired of unnecessary requests, you can revoke the code at any time.

Both of these features were found in the beta version of WhatsApp 2.19.151. But, as I already mentioned, none of them are available for the public just yet. The estimated time of release is unknown, too, as it’s up to the WhatsApp’s development team to feel comfortable about the update. You can download WhatsApp from the Play Store listing below.

Update: Now In Public Beta

Starting today, WhatsApp can share Status posts to Facebook Stories and even Instagram, Gmail, and Google Photos. It’s important to point out that WhatsApp is not linking your Facebook account, which some may assume since the company owns both services. WhatsApp is using Android’s sharing APIs that other apps use. There is no automatic interlinking between the Facebook-owned services. This feature is rolling out to the latest WhatsApp Public Beta.
