Using early versions of any type of software has the potential to reveal some upcoming features that are currently being worked on. These new features rarely get announced while they are in early development because you never know if it has to get pulled and canceled. We haven’t heard of Google talking about giving Chrome users on Android the ability to change the order of their bookmarks, yet. But we feel that such an announcement is coming soon as we recently discovered a new Chrome flag that is finally supposed to allow us to reorder our bookmarks.
Managing your Chrome bookmarks on a mobile device isn’t the best user experience, to begin with. Sure, it’s quick and easy to add them, delete them, and find the bookmark you’re looking for. Beyond that though, it takes a bit more time than most would hope and then there are some features which aren’t even there at all. One such feature is the ability to change the order in which your bookmarks appear (in a folder for example). It’s quicker and easier if the bookmarks you access the most are put right up at the top.
That type of thought isn’t made when you save a bookmark though. And if you don’t have access to the desktop version of Chrome then you were not able to change the order of the bookmarks you have saved. You would need to create a new folder and then move the saved bookmarks to the new folder in the order you want. There simply isn’t any other way of doing this on Chrome for Android. This will be changing in the future though as a new commit shows a hidden Chrome flag to enable such a feature.
We tested this new feature by enabling it on the latest Nightly build of Chrome but we were unable to get it working. So the method in which bookmarks can be reordered is not very intuitive or the flag is present in the latest Nightly build but the feature itself doesn’t work. Bugs like this (and even just incomplete features) are to be expected in nightly versions of any type of software. We’ll be keeping our eye on this feature though as we have high hopes it will begin working in the near future.
