HTC U19e and HTC Desire 19+ are decent mid-range smartphones from the once-popular brand

Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC isn’t exactly winning any awards in 2019, but the company is still trying to keep up with the competition. Today, the brand announced two new mid-range smartphones devices, the HTC U19e and HTC Desire 19+, for its homeland, Taiwan.

The first device on our list is the HTC U19e. Design-wise, it has larger bezels than what we’ve seen on other devices, but at least it doesn’t have a notch. It packs a 6.0-inch OLED panel at 1080×2160 resolution. Internally, you’ll find the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 and 6 GB of RAM which are more than enough to power your apps. It also has 128GB of internal storage. The device has a respectable 3,930 mAh battery, too. As for the camera, you’ll find a dual rear 12MP f/1.8 aperture lens + 20MP f/2.6 aperture telephoto lens. On the front, you’ll find a 24MP f/2.0 aperture lens and, surprisingly, a 2MP iris scanner for secure facial recognition.

The HTC U19e

The next device on our list is the HTC Desire 19+. It is less powerful than the U19e with the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC and 4GB starting RAM option. The battery is 3,850 mAh in capacity while the display is a 6.2-inch HD+ water-drop notch panel. This device has a triple rear camera system with a 13MP lens, 8MP ultra wide-angle lens, and a 5MP depth sensor. Though, there is only one 16MP camera on the front.

HTC Desire 19+

The HTC U19e will arrive in two colors: Extraordinary Purple and Modest Green. Sales start today in Taiwan at a price of 14,900 NT$, which is about $475. The HTC Desire 19+ will retail for 9,990 NT$ (~$315) and 10,990 NT$ (~$350) for the 4GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB models.

The U19e seems like a decent competitor to the Google Pixel 3a series, although the Pixel 3a likely has the better camera and definitely better software support given the uncertainty around HTC’s future. The once-popular brand is still kicking, and we hope that it can eventually return to its former glory. But, don’t hold your breath.
