Xiaomi launches Redmi Note 7S with a 48MP camera, Snapdragon 660 for ₹10,999

Xiaomi is known to offer great products at a high price proposition and that is primarily because the company operates on a very thin profit margin. Besides fierce marketing, what establishes Xiaomi as the market leader in India is the fact that it launches a myriad of smartphones at small price increments. Often, different smartphones overlap with each other not only in terms of specifications but also pricing and the company has launched yet another smartphone with a similar philosophy to secure its hold on the Indian market. Xiaomi just announced the Redmi Note 7S with a 48MP primary camera sensor as the only aspect that differentiates it from the Redmi Note 7.

Xiaom is reportedly facing a huge demand for the Redmi Note 7 Pro with a 48MP primary camera and this is what seems to have inspired the company to bring Redmi Note 7S. While Xiaomi is touting the “flagship-grade” 48MP camera on the Note 7S, it has not revealed the exact make or model of this sensor. We suspect that this is a Samsung GM1 sensor which is also available on the Chinese as well as global variants of the Redmi Note 7 (the Indian variant of the Note 7 comes with a 12MP sensor). We’ll add more detail as we learn more.

In effect, the images captured with this sensor will be 12MP in size. This is because the 48MP sensor on the Redmi Note 7S also supports 4-in-1 Super Pixel technology, which is Xiaomi’s chosen name for pixel binning. The 0.8μm pixels combine to form 1.6μm Super pixels. As for the selfie camera, it is the same 13MP sensor as the Note 7.

The Redmi Note 7S is also powered by a Snapdragon 660 and comes with options between 3GB and 4GB of RAM. In terms of storage, you get 32GB and 64GB variants. It uses a 4,000mAh battery, which is also the same as the Redmi Note 7.

As for its pricing, the Note 7S comes for ₹1,000 extra and starts at ₹10,999 for the 3GB+32GB model. The 4GB+64GB variant comes at ₹12,999. It will be available starting May 23 via Flipkart, Mi.com, Mi Home retail stores, and a range of Xiaomi-authorized online stores.

You might as well spend ₹1,000 over the 4GB+64GB variant and get the Redmi Note 7 Pro with a newer and more powerful Snapdragon 675 SoC. But if you’re looking to spend in the ballpark figure of ₹10,000, then the 48MP camera on the Note 7S might attract some shutterbugs over the Note 7.
