The Redmi K20 will be another bezel-less flagship smartphone with a pop-up camera

Xioami’s off-shoot Redmi has dented the sales of smartphone majors worldwide due to the value propositions that its smartphones offer. So far, Redmi has been limited to the budget segment, but the company is all set for a breakthrough with its upcoming flagship device – the Redmi K20. Ahead of the official launch in China on May 28th, we’re witnessing multiple teasers from the company itself, touting the flagship killer specifications of the Redmi K20.

Snapdragon 855

First off, the Redmi K20 has been confirmed to sport Snapdragon 855 chipset, clearly indicating that the smartphone will sit on the top of Xiaomi’s catalog of smartphones alongside the likes of Xiaomi Mi 9. Back in April, we broke news about two Xiaomi devices, codenamed “Raphael” and “Davinci”, being powered by the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform and recently Redmi Lu Weibing confirmed that the K20 is, in fact, Raphael.

Perhaps, Redmi would be somewhat conservative in terms of the RAM, which is why we haven’t heard much from the company but the smartphone should easily sport 6GB and 8GB variants, if not higher.

Triple rear cameras with a 48MP sensor

Based on a recent render shared by the Weibing, the Redmi K20 will feature triple cameras on the back. In another Weibo post, he confirmed that the primary sensor among these will be a Sony IMX586 with 48MP resolution. This is the same sensor on the Mi 9, the Redmi Note 7 Pro, and also the OnePlus 7 duo. There is no clear information about the other two sensors, but we suspect one of them to a wide-angle module while the other a telephoto setup. This is because the Mi 9 features a similar setup including a 12MP telephoto sensor with 2X zoom and a 16MP super-wide-angle sensor with 117° field of view.

Additionally, the primary camera has also been confirmed to support slo-mo videos at 960fps and while the resolution for this mode has not been confirmed, we can expect it to be capped at 720fps.

The render also shows an attractive 3D design for the back, which appears to be made of glass, although there is no confirmation yet.

Notchless display, pop-up selfie camera, in-display fingerprint scanner

Besides sharing a look of the back of the Redmi K20, the company also teased what the smartphone could look like from the front. This affirms previous teasers – and our previous findings about mysterious Xiaomi devices with pop-up cameras – which hinted at the use of a pop-up selfie camera on the smartphone. Weibing noted in a Weibo post that the slider mechanism for the pop-up camera can open and close for up to 300,000 times without malfunctioning. Along with that, the flagship will be sporting a seventh-gen in-display fingerprint scanner from Synaptics, which is expected to increase the unlock success rate noticeably, compared to the previous generation scanners.

The render does not show the earpiece on the top of the display cleary and while the display panel appears to be curved along the edges, we might see some deviance on the smartphone compared to the renders. Lastly, the executive also confirmed that this will be an AMOLED display – which we can expect to be made by Samsung.

4000 mAh battery

Apart from these disclosures, Redmi has also revealed that the flagship will host a 4,000mAh battery, which is 21% larger than the 3300mAh battery on the Mi 9. While we can expect support for Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+, it would be a pleasant surprise if Redmi includes a fast charger within the box, even though the likeliness of it is pretty low. Aside from this, there will be a score of AI optimizations to improve the backup of the battery.

Redmi K20 coming to India soon

Following its launch in China next week, the Redmi K20 could be arriving in India as hinted by Xiaomi India’s MD Manu Kumar Jain. If it does, we don’t foresee any major change from the Chinese/global units but given Xiaomi’s track record of baffling us with different specifications and varied naming, we could expect some modification – or even a new model.

Our Editor-in-Chief, Mishaal Rahman, had previously unearthed devices codenamed “raphaelin” and “davinciin”, suggesting that these could possibly be different devices for India.

Meanwhile, a lot of things about the device including different RAM and storage variants, availability of headphone jack, support for wireless charging, screen size, etc. are yet to be confirmed on May 28.
