The launch of the Pixel 3 duo last year may have been spoiled due to the veracity of the leaks which started flowing in months before the launch, but Google managed to keep things interesting with camera features like Top Shot, Super Res Zoom, Night Sight, Photobooth, and a host of AR playmoji. Among these features, Top Shot ensures that you get the best shot, avoiding any blurring or photo-bombs. While other features have slowly trickled down from the Pixel 3 to the older Pixel devices, Google recently confirmed that the Top Shot feature will not be arriving on the Pixel 2 or the OG Pixel devices.
But in spite of this confirmation from Google, what has sparked the curiosity of certain Pixel 2 users is that they can recommendations in Google Photos for the best shots. Some Reddit users have reported of seeing dots on top of a filmstrip when taking Motion Photos with their Pixel 2. As can be seen in the screenshot below, this image was taken with a Pixel 2 XL and the dimensions of the screenshot correspond to the resolution of a Pixel 2 XL, suggesting that Top Shot could be available on the smartphone – or maybe even older Pixel devices – for a limited number of users.
Among the couple of other users who reported seeing Top Shot, one reports that they are on Android Q, which also suggests that Google might bring the feature to older Pixel smartphones with the Android Q update. At the same time, there are comments denying the feature which suggests that Google may be testing the feature out with only a small group of users.
Meanwhile, if you want to try out Top Shot on your Pixel 2 or older the OG Pixel, there is an unofficial workaround and that is using the Google Camera mod by XDA Senior Member cstark. You might also need to uninstall the older updates to Google Photos (note: not install the app) and install the Photos app for Pixel 3 to get Top Shot running on your smartphone.
