OPPO first presented its primitive concept for optical zooming on a smartphone at MWC Barcelona in 2017. After two years of unsounded iteration and reformation, the company exhibited its 10X lossless zoom technology once again at the trade show this year and a few months later, the OPPO Reno 10X Zoom edition was revealed as the first functional smartphone from the company to come with a polished optical zoom feature. Besides the innovative zoom functionality, the two smartphones also feature a quirky sideways lifting selfie camera and a stunning 93.1% screen to body ratio. Announced last month in China, the OPPO Reno series is now making its way to India with a starting price that will definitely worry Huawei.
OPPO Reno 10X Zoom edition
The superior of the two models, the OPPO Reno 10X Zoom edition – as the name gives away – supports 5X optical, 10X lossless hybrid zoom, and up to 50X digital zoom. The smartphone features a triple camera setup including 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor with f/1.7 aperture as the primary sensor and an 8MP, f/2.2 sensor for 120º wide field of view. For optical zooming, the smartphone uses a periscopic setup similar to Huawei’s P30 Pro. This module uses a 13MP sensor with an f/3.0 aperture. With these specifications, the OPPO Reno 10X Zoom edition can be expected to give a tough fight to the Huawei flagship. In terms of video, the Reno supports recording at up to 4K 60fps and uses multiple microphones for a stereo surround sound effect.
On the front, there’s a notchless 6.6-inch OLED Full HD+ display while the 16MP selfie camera is housed in a wedge-shaped notch, which to me, resembles a slice of pie or pizza. Fixed at one end, the notch rises from the other presumably with rotation and seeing this in action can be quite beguiling in the beginning. Needless to say, it is attention-grabbing, as well. The pop-up also hides away the front and the back flashes as well as the earpiece. Meanwhile, there’s a fingerprint scanner under the display, as well.
On the hardware front, the OPPO Reno 10X is powered by Snapdragon 855 and up to 8GB of RAM and this gives it solid ground against the Huawei’s leading chipset – the HiSilicon Kirin 980. Additionally, the smartphone features a 4065mAh battery with VOOC 3.0 fast charging.
In terms of software, the smartphone runs ColorOS 6 based on Android 9 Pie, being the first OPPO phone to be running the latest version of the company’s custom Android skin. It will also be among the first smartphones from OPPO to get an Android Q update.

OPPO Reno Standard Edition
OPPO Reno Standard Edition, which can also be treated as the Lite edition of OPPO Reno, shares a lot of its characteristics with the other device. Both smartphones have the same 48MP primary sensor on the back, same RAM and storage options, and a similarly pop-up with the same selfie camera.
The features which set OPPO Reno Standard apart from the 10X Zoom edition include its smaller 6.4-inch display OLED, which also features an in-display fingerprint sensor. Additionally, it gets dual cameras on the back including a 5MP secondary sensor to complement the primary 48MP one, as well as a Snapdragon 710 SoC. This smartphone does not support optical zooming capabilities.
