The 2019 Google I/O keynote just started an hour ago, but we’ve already seen so many interesting announcements. One of the most important ones by far is the introduction of the next generation Google Assitant. The Google-made digital assistant was released almost exactly three years ago at Google I/O 2016. It aimed to execute commands easily with your voice and with minimal hand input. The new demo shown off at I/O 2019 shows that the upcoming Assistant will be much faster and more reliable than ever before when it debuts on the Google Pixel 4.
Google’s representatives showed off footage of asking Google Assitant to do various commands like turning on the flashlight, composing an email, searching for specific photos you’ve taken in specific locations, and so on. Google Assistant executed all these commands without issues. The back and forth conversation was nearly seamless with minimal latency and no problems. It was demonstrated on the Google Pixel 3 device, but Google said the new version of the digital assistant isn’t available for Pixel phones just yet.
In fact, the new Assistant will be released alongside the Google Pixel 4 flagship devices later this year, most likely in October. The new Google Assistant also improves the Duplex experience, which was released last year at Google I/O 2018. It now has the ability to book your reservations and rentals on the web without initiating a call or conversation yourself. It will fill all your details and try to guess your preferences based on previous experiences.
There’s also one more feature that we’ve needed but never realized we needed it. Assistant-connected smart devices will now stop playing timer and alarm sounds just by saying ‘stop.’ There’s also the addition of a driving mode, which we’ll go into depth on in another article.
It is not unknown when Google will bring the next generation of Assistant to previous Pixel devices. All we know is that Google Pixel 4 will support it later this year. Google demoed the feature on the Pixel 3 device, so it’ll most likely support it at the very least.
