Samsung rolls out One UI for the Galaxy Watch, Gear S3, and Gear Sport with improved workout tracking, new watch faces

Until recently, the software experience on Samsung devices came up short of the hardware, forcing many users to seek unofficial mods and custom ROMs to improve the experience. Last year, the company acknowledged this as feedback and completely overhauled the UI, which incepted Samsung’s One UI. The One UI, based on Android 9.o Pie, reimagines how consumers interact with their mobile devices. Among the major changes in this new UI is a flatter, minimal, and more visually appealing design while the interactive elements are relocated to the bottom of the interface so that users can easily use their smartphones with a single hand. Besides this, Samsung has also been more nimble in terms of sending out updates and has already issued One UI for not just its flagships and mid-range devices, but even some others in the entry-level segment.

Apart from smartphones, Samsung is giving similar treatment to its wearable with One UI update now being available on the Samsung Galaxy Watch, Gear S3, and the Gear Sport smartwatches through an OTA update. The interface is still powered by Samsung’s custom Tizen OS and not Android but these new changes bring the older smartwatches at par with the Galaxy Watch Active, a more affordable watch released alongside the Galaxy S10 series back in February.

The update brings a refreshed interface that is synchronous with the One UI on Galaxy smartphones along with improved workout tracking and battery optimizations. Besides the Daily Activity alerts, these smartwatches will now inform you of any unusual cardiac activity through high heart rate alerts, especially when you’re not exercising. A new mode for tracking outdoor swimming has been added with the update, as well.

The One UI update also makes automatic tracking of workouts faster than before and adds the ability to wake the watch up just by tapping on the display once. Plus, the multitasking on these Samsung watches has been improved and there’s an additional option to turn the sleeping mode on or off. Lastly, there are some new watch faces for Samsung’s timepieces.

The update weighs around 100MB and shall roll out to users in phases.
