Xiaomi’s spin-off Redmi is preparing to debut its first flagship smartphone, the Redmi K20, next week in China. The smartphone features a notch-less display, a pop-up selfie camera, Snapdragon 855, triple rear cameras, etc., along with an attractive 3D finish on the back. The Redmi K20 will also be accompanied by the successor to the entry-level Redmi 6A. Being wary that the flagship killer may gulp down all of the attention, the company has already soft-launched the Redmi 7A, with only price remaining to be announced at the event next week.
The Redmi 7A is equipped with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 SoC, offering a 26% performance boost over the MediaTek Helio A22 on the Redmi 6A. It sports a 5.45-inch HD+ display, which is claimed to have a better response and improved blue-light filtering over the 6A. From the images, the back appears to be made out of polycarbonate, although the design feels more seamless than the last year’s smartphone. The back panel also comes with a P2i coating to repel water or oil-based liquids and on top of that, the smartphone is splash-resistant. However, the company still deems that a fingerprint scanner may be unnecessary at this price point.
In terms of photography, the camera on the Redmi 7A seemingly remains unchanged. It comes with a 13MP sensor on the back along with a single LED flash and is supported by AI algorithms to improve imagery. While the resolution of the front camera has not been revealed, the company says that it will support AI beauty enhancements and a background bokeh effect alongside support for AI face unlocking.
For its power needs, the Redmi 7A gets a 4,000mAh battery. While this is 33% larger than the Redmi 6A, Xiaomi will be upgrading the in-box charger to 10W charger from the 5W brick available with the previous phone.
The Redmi 7A comes in blue and black shades for the back panel. Meanwhile, we have yet to learn the different storage and RAM options, although we can expect the standard offerings in the series, including 2GB+16GB and 3GB+32GB. The company, however, did reveal that the smartphone will feature a non-hybrid SIM tray with support for up to 256GB SD cards.
As for the price, the company has saved that bit for the Redmi K20 launch event on May 28th. Along with the K20 and the Redmi 7A, the company could be expected to launch a new laptop, likely to be called the RedmiBook 14.
