OnePlus 7 Series kernel source code is now available

Last Tuesday, we were treated to the announcement of OnePlus’ latest fleet of devices, which for the first time included not one, but two devices. The OnePlus 7 serves as a successor to the OnePlus 6T, with small improvements such as a Snapdragon 855 processor and an improved camera sensor, while keeping most of the other things simple and intact. The OnePlus 7 Pro, however, is a completely different beast unlike anything OnePlus has ever released before. With a bigger, QHD notch-less 90Hz display, up to 12GB of RAM, and with triple cameras, OnePlus is trying to stop playing in budget flagship territory and trying to compete with names such as the Samsung Galaxy S10, the Huawei P30 Pro, and the iPhone XS Max.

We’ve yet to see if the efforts made by OnePlus towards making this “premium” smartphone a reality are worth it. But one thing is for certain: OnePlus doesn’t seem to be losing the community roots that made them so big in the first place. OnePlus phones are really popular in our forums since they’re relatively easy to bootloader-unlock and root, and with readily available kernel sources, they’re also a boon for custom ROM/kernel development and overall modding. Now, the kernel source code for both the regular OnePlus 7 as well as for the OnePlus 7 Pro has been released.

This means that developers can now get their hands on both devices and start developing custom AOSP-based ROMs, such as LineageOS and Pixel Experience, or custom kernels for these devices. If you’re a user, then don’t expect these to appear immediately in our forums: they still need to go through the development process, and things such as the moving front-facing camera, the 90Hz display, and the triple rear camera could introduce potential problems to the overall bring-up process. On the other hand, an unofficial TWRP release has already appeared on our forums, so development should pick up fairly quickly especially since OnePlus restarted the developer program.

Nonetheless, we are still excited to see what developments will come to both devices. You can check out the kernel sources right here.
