Cloud gaming and game streaming seem to be the new trends for gaming going forward. Game streaming platforms aim to bring high-quality gaming to everyone by eliminating the need to own expensive hardware: all you need is a decently fast and stable internet connection to get started. You’ll have access to a library of cloud-stored games that you’ll be able to launch and play, in the same style as watching a movie or show on Netflix. Everyone is looking into getting a piece of the game streaming cake, including Microsoft and Google with their Microsoft xCloud and Google Stadia gaming services.
xCloud, as it stands, is shaping up to be pretty much a cloud-based Xbox One console. You’ll be able to play everything you can play on the Xbox One right now, spanning a library of 3,500 titles (including Xbox 360 and Xbox titles as well, thanks to retro-compatibility). It was announced last fall, and recently, the company just finished an alpha rollout for Microsoft employees to collect feedback towards more public trials later this year.
Google, on the other hand, is also set to announce more details on Stadia, such as prices, game libraries, and launch information very, very soon–as soon as this Summer, according to Google. This means that we should expect more Stadia announcements to come in the following months. We don’t know a lot of details about Stadia as of yet, mind you, with the only confirmed games being DOOM Eternal and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, but we’ll know more by then.
Both projects sound very exciting and, in my opinion, might be able to represent the future of gaming and eventually replace the need of gaming consoles and gaming hardware in the long run, at least for the wider public. But it will still need to go a long way to even become a viable option.
