Honor recently launched their newest Honor 20 flagship series at an event in London, giving us two capable devices in the form of the Honor 20 and the Honor 20 Pro. These new smartphones bring over new camera technologies in order to compete with the recent competition from other flagship devices like the OnePlus 7 Pro, the Xiaomi Mi 9 and the ASUS ZenFone 6. Much like the new Honor phones, the previously launched Honor View20 also brought in new features like the punch hole display and the 48MP Sony IMX 586 sensor, making it one of the first devices launched with this now-popular camera sensor.
Here is a look at how the new Honor flagships size up to the comparatively older Honor View20!

Despite launching in December 2018, the Honor View20 came with top-notch specifications, which lets it maintain itself closer to the newly launched flagships. The Kirin 980 SoC that powers the View20 is also found in other late-2018 and early-2019 flagships like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, the Huawei P30 Pro and the new Honor 20 and Honor 20 Pro. For now, this is one of the flagship SoC options available for users if they do not wish to opt for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 or Samsung’s Exynos 9820, which highlights its importance in keeping the flagship SoC market competitive in the greater interest of consumers. And as expected from a flagship SoC, the Kirin 980 provides for great performance in all the devices it makes an appearance in, including the Honor View 20 and Honor 20 series. Performance wise, these Honor devices should be the same experience practically, and that’s a good thing.

The Honor View 20 is credited for pioneering the 48MP rear camera trend, and also for bringing the display hole trend to Honor devices. While the camera on the Honor View20 was groundbreaking, other devices quickly outdid it with periscope zoom lenses and more camera sensors. The Honor 20 Pro built on the groubwork set by the Honor View20 to create a significantly better camera. The Honor 20 Pro aims to provide features similar to the Huawei P30 Pro but at a much more affordable price tag. The focus of the devices are different, and their design also lends them some more points of differentiation. While the Honor 20 and Honor 20 Pro are subjectively beautiful devices with their “Dynamic Holographic Design” for a depth-inducing optical effect, the Honor View20 features a rather striking V-shaped shimmer effect on its back which users may find much more beautiful.
The Honor 20 Pro is the clear superior to the Honor View 20. While having a smaller form factor than the Honor View20, it’s able to pack in a wider angle lens, a 30x zoom feature, macro shots as close as 4cm, and a DxOMark of 111. The Honor 20 Pro’s versatile camera setup makes it easy to recommend, especially if you are on a tighter budget and do not want to spend too much on a smartphone. The Honor 20 sits in between, giving up a few camera tricks, and with lower RAM and storage options for a lower price tag. It all boils down to consumer preference at the end, and Honor finds itself in a favorable position with a wider preference and price coverage with these new smartphones.
Any article on Honor/Huawei would be incomplete without mentioning the current political restrictions placed on Huawei by the executive order from President Trump that restricts US-based companies from doing business with Huawei. The order, in turn, had forced Google to revoke Huawei’s Android license, which had further implications for using Google Play services on these devices as well as the future of Android updates for them. Huawei has mentioned that it will “continue to provide security updates and after sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products covering those have been sold or still in stock globally”, and it will “work closely with Google” to work out a solution that mitigates the impact on consumers. After the executive order, the US Commerce Department did grant Huawei temporary reprieve in the form of a 90-day general license, which allowed Google to reverse its decision, with a reassessment due at the end of this period. For now, Huawei’s existing smartphones are unaffected.
