Google will make more mid-range Pixel smartphones like the Pixel 3a

Google plans to breathe life into the falling demand of its Pixel lineup of smartphones with the new Pixel 3a and the Pixel 3a XL, which bring the best of Pixel 3‘s camera abilities at nearly half its price. While it may seem so, the Pixel 3a is not part of any commercial soak test and Google will extend its lineup of affordable devices further. The tech giant is reportedly working on launching an affordable mid-tier smartphone corresponding to its flagship Pixel device every year.

Google recently confirmed to Android Police that it will extend the “a” series beyond the Pixel 3a/3a XL and launch more affordable Pixel phones in the future. That may compromise the sales of the flagship series, but the company is positive of selling a greater number of devices and thus, regaining some of the lost ground. While it might be too far-fetched to predict (or presume) the future of the new lineup, we can easily bet on a Pixel 4a – and a Pixel 4a XL.

However, the launch date of the affordable variants of the Pixel 4 or the Pixel 4 XL is unclear at this moment. It is possible that Google keeps a safe six-month gap between its premium and affordable smartphone series to prevent the former from cannibalizing the later, although we’re not yet sure about this.

Google has made some evident compromises in the Pixel 3a, be it using plastic for the body instead of glass, omitting wireless charging, using a mid-range chipset, a weaker display, or an inferior haptics engine. Likewise, it would be interesting to see the corners that Google might cut with the next affordable Pixel. Whether Google will use the same rear camera sensor on the Pixel 4a as the Pixel 4 or opt for a cheaper alternative is something we’d be interested in seeing.

Meanwhile, Google is also putting efforts in experimenting with different form factors and may soon reveal some of its foldable prototypes soon. However, it denies any possibility of launching a foldable smartphone any time soon.
