Digital Wellbeing is a service from Google that gives the user tools so they can monitor and control their own application usage. Sometimes, just knowing that you spend 2-3 hours a day on a social networking app or a mobile game can really help you to focus on more important tasks. The feature has been rolling out to a number of Android devices but OEMs are using the feature in different ways. Some are hooking right into it with their own applications which is what Google has done with the Pixel Launcher on Android Q.
A couple of months ago we reported on the new Android Q feature that allows for Digital Wellbeing style features to be integrated into 3rd-party launchers. It will be interesting to see how the various OEMs use this feature when the official Android Q update rolls out. At that time, Google had already begun to experiment with this and its own Pixel Launcher. At the time it wasn’t a feature that was available to everyone running Android Q on a Pixel smartphone but a new update to Digital Wellbeing has now added another feature.
Digital Wellbeing is also great for being able to tune out some of your most distracting applications. This can be useful at various points throughout the day but it can be even better for those times when you know you need to focus for a certain amount of time. Google is making this more easy to trigger by adding a Pause App option to any app shortcut. The feature can be displayed in a couple of different ways. Both images show how the feature’s UI can vary depending on the application and its app shortcuts.
Naturally, pausing an application will let Android’s Digital Wellbeing feature to restrict access to it and prevent it from disturbing you with notifications (until it has been unpaused). Users should begin seeing this feature rolled out in beta version 1.0.2483 of the application.
