WhatsApp‘s unimaginable large userbase is a bane when it comes to the moderation of content on the platform. Being the world’s largest messaging app, it has become a harbor where fake news and misinformation can be easily peddled in a fashion that it looks real. On top of that, many of the users in developing countries like Indi,m who are still getting familiar with the idea of instant messaging via mobile phones, fall easy culprits to this trade. This is what has compelled WhatsApp to build features that inform users when they receive forwarded messages, and put a limit to the number of times a message can be forwarded. Now, WhatsApp is adding another feature to uphold the privacy of users, giving them control over which groups they wish to join.
Starting today, users will have different options for choosing who can add them to WhatsApp groups. WhatsApp announced that this new feature will be available to all users. By heading over to the Privacy Settings in WhatsApp, users will be able to choose among “Anyone”, “My contact”, and “Nobody” options for who can add them to a group. If you reserve this privilege to your contacts, others will still be able to invite you to their groups. Likewise, if you’d like to examine all groups before joining, irrespective of who is adding you, choosing “Nobody” will help you avoid being added to a group against your will.
Admins of the groups will be able to send you invites for joining their groups via a direct message. They will also be able to add a custom message while inviting you. Once you click on “Join group”, you will get an overview of the group and its members. Depending on this, you may choose to accept or reject the invitations. To make sure you receive this feature, keep the app updated or grab the latest version from APK Mirror.
Apart from limiting who can add you to a group, WhatsApp also announced a helpline in India to fact-check information you receive via the messaging app. This is expected to play a pivotal role during the upcoming general elections in the country.
