OnePlus is one of the most developer-friendly smartphone brands today. Not only that, but they also provide faster software updates than other brands like LG, Motorola, HTC, etc. If you aren’t running a custom ROM, then you’re running their OxygenOS software which is a skinned Android release with more features. The company rolls out new features with OxygenOS updates, but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to just receive a security and stability update. Today, they released such an update for their 2017 OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T.
OxygenOS 9.0.5 fixes a few bugs here and there, but the most important addition is the April 2019 security patches. With this update, your phone is now secured against the recently disclosed flaw found in Qualcomm’s Secure Execution Environment (QSEE). Although that flaw allows attackers to extract the private keys from the QSEE on many Qualcomm Snapdragon devices, it does need an attacker to have root-level privileges on your device. That’s a high bar to meet since Android has many protections against drive-by rooting exploits, but since many readers on XDA have unlocked the bootloader on their devices, they’re at risk for this flaw. Thankfully, the flaw has been patched.
Stability improvements include fixing issues with parallel apps and gaming mode. You can read the full changelog for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T’s latest update below:
- System
- Updated Android security patch to 2019.4
- Phone
- Improved stability for the Phone app
- Parallel Apps
- Fixed issue with parallel apps showing primary account
- Fixed issues with download pictures in parallel WhatsApp
- Gaming mode
- Fixed couldn’t receive third-party apps video call issues
OxygenOS 9.0.5 is a pretty minor update which ensures the security and reliability of the devices. You will only receive this update if you are on the stable channel. As always, OnePlus sends out the update to a small percentage of users first. After making sure that everything works, the update will be more widely available.
