The Huawei P30 Pro and the Honor View20 are two recently launched flagship devices which are equipped with a 3D Time of Flight (ToF) sensor. This sensor is useful for accurately sensing the distance between the phone and any physical object for an accurate depth in portrait shots and motion-controlled gaming similar to an Xbox Kinect. Another handy application of the 3D ToF sensor lies in its ability to measure the size of an object or the distance between two points on a flat surface without touching it physically.
Huawei has an app called “AR Measure” dedicated to measuring distances with the help of the ToF camera and it has been limited to the P30 Pro units in China. While launching the flagship in Paris last month, Huawei teased the functionality and said that it would arrive soon on the global unit soon. Now, with the second update (EMUI ver. 9.1.0.140) since its launch, the Huawei P30 Pro is receiving the AR Measure app globally.
Apart from the new AR Measure app, the update brings performance and camera improvements to the P30 Pro and installs the Google security patch from April 2019.
Besides the P30 Pro, the Honor View20 is also getting the AR measurement features as part of the latest update to Magic UI. These updates are specific to the model numbers PCT-TL10 and PCT-AL10, which are the Chinese variants of the View20 (or the Honor V20, as it is known in the country). With Magic UI build number 9.0.1.173, AR Measure is live on the V20. Additionally, the update also optimizes the touch response of the display on the Honor V20.
Here’s a demo of how the AR Measure app works on the P30 Pro shared by XDA Senior Member HellStorm666. They have also extracted the app and you can download it from this link. While it installs on the Huawei P30 Pro review unit I have, it is very jittery and nowhere as smooth as the video, suggesting that it might need the 9.1.0.140 update to function properly.
While there’s currently no information about the AR Measure’s availability on Honor View20 units outside of China, we can expect it to be rolled out in the coming few weeks, considering that Huawei is already making the feature available on non-Chinese units. For now, you can use Measure by Google, which may not utilize the ToF camera but can be useful for taking measurements from a distance.
