Google’s Pixelbook division is making new laptops and tablets

Google has been the major player in software for many years, but their hardware-related ambitions have been unpredictable so far. As of now, the only seriously taken hardware division is the Pixel phones. Google hasn’t had much success in producing tablets, laptops, and convertibles. Some of them were lacking the perfection of the hardware, while others were limited by the mobile (or browser-based) software. That’s why it wasn’t a surprise when we saw reports of the company shifting dozens of employees from the laptop and tablet divisions. A new report reveals there is more to the story.

Google’s representative told The Verge that new hardware products are on the way. We know basically nothing about these devices, but 9to5Google reveals yet another hint. At Google Cloud Next 2019, the company gave a sneak peek of “Google Hardware for Business.” The product is aiming to “empower your agile, modern workforce to be productive on-the-go.” The Product Manager of Pixelbook Group, Steve Jacobs, also hinted at the cloud-first nature of the upcoming devices, saying that “there are some unique things we can do differently than the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate that are going to really help give them what they’re looking for when they’re working in this new modern cloud-first era.”

Jacob’s LinkedIn profile also suggests that there’s a totally new division named “Emerging,” but we have no idea what it is. My guess is that the new device is simply a laptop with more cloud features. I can’t really see how different it will be from Chrome OS, but I guess we have to wait. Google I/O 2019 may give us some details about the “Google Hardware for Business.” There may even be a dedicated event for the announcement.
