Huawei announced EMUI 9.1 based on Android 9.0 Pie last month at the Huawei P30 Pro launch. It comes with with a slew of changes over EMUI 9.0 including a simpler and more intuitive UI, GPU Turbo 3.0, nature alarm sounds, optimizations to HiVoice, improved AR functionality with HiVision, etc. While EMUI 9.1 is currently available on select devices including the P30 Pro, Mate 20 Pro, and the Mate 20 X, the company has promised the update for as many as 49 Huawei and Honor devices. Now, a beta update brings the latest EMUI to a dozen of devices in China and paves way for the global update.
The changelog for the update notes that EMUI 9.1 adds “a twist of nature and simplicity” while preserving the basic flavor of Android. The streamlined experience improves the way you interact with your smartphone and brings additional safety for users. The list of devices which are receiving the beta update in China include:

- Huawei P10
- Honor View20 (Magic UI 2.1)

- Tips
- Tips provides you with useful tips and hints for using your Huawei device, including reminders during daily use, and includes a “Try now” option for highlight features.
- Full-screen translation
- Simply hold two fingers on some text to translate the entire screen. Multiple languages supported.
- System music
- Updates the pre-downloaded songs to better cater to your preference.
- Incoming call video
- Customizes incoming call videos for your contacts.
- HiVoice
- Optimizes HiVoice, allowing you to use voice commands to take selfies, record slow-mo videos, obtain calorie information, recognize and identify objects, scan QR codes, and search images.
- Password vault
- Never worry about forgetting another password. Just put them in your Password vault, and it will autofill your passwords after a simple and secure identity authentication.
- Digital balance
- Updates Student mode to Digital balance and adds the Screen time, App limits, and Bedtime settings. Digital balance helps you understand and manage your and your child’s habits, so you and your family can live in perfect harmony with technology.
- Pure safety
- Your phone can recognize which apps are safe, and knows how to protect itself. It will alert you of potential risks and block malicious operations.
- Recorder
- Adds features such as edit and speed up to Recorder, and optimizes the interface for consistency and ease of operation.
- Phone Clone
- Improves the data transfer speed and integrity of Phone Clone.
- Faster launch times
- We’ve improved launch speeds for the most popular apps on the market. Functionality Once-heavy processes now move lightning fast. We’ve boosted QR code scanning in WeChat, loading times for large photos, shotting, sharing, and more.
While there are plenty of new features to try out, including GPU Turbo 3.0, which increases the number of supported titles from 6 to 25, and Digital Balance, which is Huawei’s take on Google’s Digital Wellbeing and informs users about the time spent in different apps, screen usage, and other behavioural patterns to restrict distractions.
Meanwhile, the update also removes support for third-party launchers and suggests that users must uninstall Google Play Services to avoid any glitch or malfunction. These, however, are limited to EMUI 9.1 in China and will not effect global users.
