The Samsung Galaxy S10 devices are marvels of smartphone design and the hole punch design makes the package even more attractive. But to implement the high screen-to-body ratio and the hole punches for the selfie camera(s), it has had to remove a crucial piece of hardware – the notification LED. Luckily, the developer community has been quick to fill the gap and has devised methods to simulate the notifications LED – and what would be more beguiling than using the hole punch camera itself?
We’ve already seen apps like Energy Ring (turns the hole punch on Galaxy S10 into a battery indicator, also supporting dual camera cutout on the Galaxy S10+) and Holey Light (transforms hole punch into a notifications indicator). Now, we have two more apps that offer similar functionality – Battery Ring and Arc Lighting. These can be seen as alternatives to the only existing options for each of the aforementioned use cases.
Battery Ring, by XDA Senior Member yogi.306, also utilizes the hole punch as a battery percentage indicator. The app gives you the liberty to fiddle with the indicator ring’s attributes such as color, position, thickness, transparency etc. Besides, there a “slick way to visualize” the charging indication, as per the developer. Interestingly, the list of smartphones supported by Battery Ring doesn’t end at the Samsung Galaxy S10 or the Galaxy S10+. It extends to a bunch of other devices with similar cutouts – including Samsung Galaxy A8s, Honor View20, Huawei Nova 4, and the Nokia x71.
Arc Lighting, on the other hand, promises a “highly customizable” experience with hole punch cutout on the Galaxy S10/S10+. Its developer – epicality – says that the cutout can be used as an indicator for audio visualizations, low or critical battery, charging state, notifications, and more. It can notify you in cases when intense gaming sessions heat up your device. With Arc Lighting on your Galaxy S10 devices, you can also use a gradient of colors for the indicator, choose from different glow effects, and also turn on a rotation animation. The app is currently in beta, so there might be some inconsistencies but you can follow the thread to notify the developer of any such issues.
