Just a few weeks ago, Samsung announced the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S10 5G, and, most importantly, the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Just a few days later, Huawei announced their own foldable, the Huawei Mate X. It’s clear that the foldable phone segment is heating up. According to a new report from Bloomberg, Samsung is working on two new foldable devices, one of which is going to be designed in a clamshell style similar to the Huawei Mate X.
Bloomberg, citing an anonymous source, says that Samsung is working on a foldable phone similar to the clamshell style that is found on the Huawei Mate X. The overwhelming majority of users considered the clamshell design of the Huawei Mate X to be superior. Samsung must agree enough to invest in designing a prototype of the Galaxy Fold in a similar style.
Along with this new design, Samsung is said to be considering releasing a style of the Galaxy Fold that folds vertically with a display on the outside. The report claims the company is deciding whether or not to keep the outside display. Samsung is said to really be basing their future designs off the feedback of the first Galaxy Fold. Along with these new designs, Bloomberg reports that Samsung is trying to implement an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, just like the Galaxy S10, into the display of the device. The current Galaxy Fold has a fingerprint scanner on the side of the phone.
Samsung may also be considering free screen replacements on the Galaxy Fold because of the crease that all foldable devices are shown to have. The company is working on making the next generation of foldable devices not crease after around 10,000 folds as the current models will. This crease is the reason Samsung is considering offering free replacements.
Samsung is working on all of these new devices to compete against other OEM’s like Huawei and Xiaomi, who are both working on foldable display smartphones. With the smartphone market becoming stagnant, manufacturers need to find new technology and innovation to market and sell. All of these companies think that foldable smartphones are the way to go.
The first generation Samsung Galaxy Fold will be available in late April for the extravagant price of $1,980. Samsung is marketing this device as a luxury product that isn’t meant for everyone. They will also only be manufacturing 1 million devices.
