ARCore is Google’s current augmented reality platform. Google’s first-generation augmented reality platform, Project Tango, was killed in December 2017 in favor of ARCore, which has been proven to be a lot more successful than its ambitious predecessor. While Project Tango required specific hardware for AR in the form of sensors and cameras, ARCore sensibly removed that requirement. It meant that the gates were opened for ARCore support on mainstream Android phones, helping expedite the platform’s popularity with users.
ARCore was launched in preview form in 2017, and version 1.0 was released in early 2018. It’s still early days for meaningful and useful augmented reality experiences on smartphones, but at least we now have the hardware required to give a great user experience. Google has been slowly and steadily increasing the number of features supported by ARCore in each new version.
The company has also been giving certification to new mid-range and flagship phone releases. In ARCore’s case, certification means that Google has checked the quality of the camera, motion sensors, and architecture to make sure that it performs as expected on the device. According to Google, the device also “needs to have a powerful CPU that integrates with the hardware design to ensure good performance and effective real-time calculations.”
Version 1.7 of ARCore brought support to new devices such as the Honor View 20, Huawei Y9 2019, the Moto G7 series, Huawei Nova 4, OPPO R17 Pro, and the Vivo NEX Dual Display. It also brought the Augmented Faces API, ARCore Elements Integration, Shared Camera Access, and more. Now, Google has certified support for the Motorola One, Motorola One Power, and the Nokia 8.1.
The Motorola One launched in the US in late 2018 for $399, while the Motorola One Power launched in India in October. The Nokia 8.1 is Nokia’s upper mid-range phone and is intended to be the successor of the Nokia 7 Plus. It was launched in India and other markets in December.
