January 2019 security update is out for all Google Pixel devices

android security

New year, new updates. Google just released the first security update of 2019. As always, it fixes a bunch of vulnerabilities on the kernel and system level. Unfortunately, the January security update hasn’t been released for any of the Nexus devices. We will keep an eye out for those devices. Along with the Pixel 3Pixel 2, and Google Pixel, the Pixel C also got the update, but it’s still Android 8.1 Oreo since the device will not be updated to Android Pie.

Apart from the standard security improvements, Google always tries to fit in a few functional patches as well. This time, the newest update includes improved audio quality when recording videos on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL devices. Despite the fact that both of these devices use stereo input to record audio, the users haven’t exactly been fans of the way software handles it. We didn’t have a chance to test how it performs after this update, but we’ll try to keep you updated.

As always, Google is using the gradual rollout method to ensure maximum stability and reliability of the update. Not everyone will receive the OTA update right away, though you can download the OTA zip file or factory image from the links at the end of the article. The detailed instruction about flashing them is available here.
