If we have to choose one thing to give credit to HMD Global for, I’d pick their commitment to software updates. They always tend to release the latest and greatest flavor of Android for their devices, especially in a timely manner. Thankfully, they use an almost vanilla version of Android, which makes it easier for them to issue software updates regularly. Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer at HMD Global, just released HMD Global’s Android Pie update roadmap for their Nokia branded Android smartphones. The roadmap reveals that the Nokia 5 and Nokia 3.1 Plus will receive an Android Pie update by the end of January.
To refresh your memory, the Nokia 3.1 Plus is a solid mid-range device, sporting a 6.0″ full-screen HD+ display, Helio P22, 3GB of RAM, and a 3500 mAh battery. It was released just a few months ago in October of 2018. Nokia 5 is an older device in comparison, and less capable too. It has a 5.2″ HD display with larger bezels and capacitive buttons, Qualcomm Snapdragon 430, 3GB RAM, and a 3000 mAh battery. It was originally released in July of 2017. It’s impressive seeing these kinds of devices receive the latest major version of the Android OS. The leaked version of Android Pie for this particular device was published a month ago.
Regarding the Android Pie update on the Nokia 6, Nokia 5.1, Nokia 3.1, and Nokia 2.1, it’s scheduled for sometime in Q1 of this year. The Nokia 3 and Nokia 1 will receive the Android Pie update in Q2.
It was last year when HMD Global promised users that they would update all of their smartphones to Android Pie. As it turns out, they are living up to this promise so far. Kudos to HMD Global.
