Smartphone OEMs are releasing new devices with new naming schemes all the time. Motorola launched the Motorola One and Motorola One Power this year, two Android One devices that are part of a new “One” line of smartphones. Now, Xiaomi is preparing to launch the Xiaomi Play in China on December 24th. The device will be the company’s first smartphone with a waterdrop notch design, as shown in the teaser images above. In addition, TENAA (China’s version of the FCC), has published certification pages for the new device which details most of its specifications.
While there is a lot of incomplete data in the TENAA certification pages, we are still getting a good bit of details about the upcoming Xiaomi Play smartphone. Details such as the compatible cellular connectivity frequencies, which include:
- 900MHz, 1800MHz, 850MHz, 1900MHz, 800MHz, 2GHz, Band 38, Band 39, Band 40, Band 41 (2555-2575 MHZ, 2575-2635 MHZ, 2635-2655 MHZ), Band 1, Band 3, Band 5, Band 8,1.9GHz, I, Band2/5/8
Although this is a new lineup for Xiaomi, it doesn’t look like they’re experimenting too much with its design. There will only be 1 screen (unlike competitor devices like the Nubia X), but it’ll have a small waterdrop notch. We’ve seen this notch design in a lot of other smartphones already like the OnePlus 6T, but this marks the first time that a Xiaomi device has such a design. The TENAA listing shows that Xiaomi will be making the Play available in a lot of color options, including:
- Black, white, blue, red, yellow, pink, green, purple, pink, gold, silver, gray
We’re looking at a device which has dimensions of 147.76×71.89×7.8 that will weigh in at 150 grams. The TENAA listing for this Xiaomi Play device says the display will be a TFT LCD and have a 5.84-inch diagonal with a 2,280×1,080 pixel resolution. Battery fanatics will be interested to learn that this version tested came with a 2,900mAh capacity battery, which is somewhat average for a smartphone with a 5.84-inch display these days. The device is said to support VoLTE and has an “independent” headphone port.
The CPU frequency is said to be at 2.3GHz, but it’s unclear which mobile platform the device will be based on. RAM options will include 3GB, 4GB, and 6GB, and internal storage options include 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. There seems to be a microSD card slot for expandable storage and it will have three cameras (which from the photos indicate one on the front and two on the back). Sadly, Android Pie lovers may have to wait as this device was certified with Android 8.1. Oreo.
Here are the photos included in the published certification page:
It’s possible that this TENAA listing is for another Xiaomi smartphone, but given the proximity to the Xiaomi Play’s release and the design similarity it’s likely the listing is for the upcoming Play. We’ll learn more about the Xiaomi Play during its December 24th launch in China.
