Last month, a MIUI China forum administrator wrote that Xiaomi would stop supporting older phones such as the Xiaomi Mi 5, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, and the Xiaomi Mi 4. This week, the company confirmed that the upcoming MIUI 10 Global update would be the last update for the Mi 5 and the Snapdragon variant of the Redmi Note 3. Going forward, the two phones will not receive any MIUI Global Beta updates, and nor will they receive a Global Stable update after MIUI 10. The Xiaomi Mi 5 already received its Android Oreo-based MIUI 10 update a few months ago, but Redmi Note 3 owners have had to wait until now. Now, Xiaomi has started rolling out Android Marshmallow-based MIUI 10 Global Stable to the Snapdragon variant of the Redmi Note 3 (device code-name: kenzo).
The MIUI 10 Global Stable update for the Redmi Note 3 highlights the software update situation for Xiaomi budget phones. The company has a good track record when it comes to MIUI version updates, but it also has a poor track record with respect to Android version updates, particularly when it comes to updating the budget and lower mid-range Redmi series.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 launched back in March 2016 as a lower mid-range phone with incredible specifications for the time. Its list of specifications includes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 SoC, 2GB/3GB of RAM with 16GB/32GB storage, 5.5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) IPS LCD, 16MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera, and a 4,050mAh battery. The phone originally shipped with MIUI 7 on top of Android 5.1 Lollipop. The MIUI 8 update was rolled out later that year, followed by the Android Marshmallow update. Unfortunately, that’s where the Android version update story ended as Xiaomi never gave an Android Nougat update for the device. Xiaomi rolled out MIUI 9 Global Stable for the Redmi Note 3 in January 2018.
The MIUI 10 Global Stable (V10.1.1.0.MHOMIFI) update for the Redmi Note 3 Snapdragon variant (alternatively known as the Redmi Note 3 Pro) has a file size of 1.1GB. It can be downloaded here. As this is a Recovery ROM, it can be flashed via the MIUI Updater app without needing to have an unlocked bootloader.
Being based on Android Marshmallow means that it lacks many features that are found in Android Nougat or Android Oreo-based MIUI 10 builds. Features such as one-finger gesture to expand notifications, bundled notifications, and in-line reply in the notifications panel will be missing on this update, simply because it’s not based on Android Nougat or any newer Android version.
As it stands, this update will be the last major update for the Redmi Note 3. Owners wishing to try newer Android versions should try out the world of custom ROMs, starting with unofficial Android Pie ports.
