The Xiaomi brand is considered by many to be the “value king” of smartphones, especially in India, thanks to their incredibly competitive prices for decent mid-range and low-end devices. The Xiaomi Redmi series of devices, in particular, has shaken up the Indian smartphone market. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro is one of the latest mid-rangers in the Redmi line that launched in India and Indonesia. It improves over the Redmi Note 5 Pro by improving on the camera software and reducing the bezel size with the introduction of a display notch. If you bought the device and aren’t a fan of its stock MIUI software, then we have good news for you: the first custom ROMs and recoveries are already available.
With access to TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project), you can install Magisk to root your phone and tweak your device with Magisk Modules. You can take things a step further by flashing a custom AOSP-based ROM to give you a close-to-stock Android experience on your new Redmi Note 6 Pro. Both TWRP and the LineageOS 15.1 builds are considered unofficial as there are a few bugs left to fix for each. For instance, /data decryption isn’t possible yet on the unofficial TWRP build, and the unofficial LineageOS 15.1 build suffers from issues with the in-call loudspeaker and the SELinux status being set to permissive.
As more users (and developers) get their hands on the device, custom development should pick up for it and hopefully these bugs will be fixed. There may be other bugs that have gone unreported, though, so be aware of that before diving in. Visit the threads linked below for the download links and instructions on how to flash TWRP and the unofficial LineageOS 15.1 build for the device.
