Nokia 3 is now receiving the Android 8.1 Oreo update

Nokia 3 Android Oreo

After they licensed the Nokia brand for use in smartphones, HMD Global has taken the industry by storm. The main reason for their success is their large portfolio of smartphones in the low and mid-range price categories, decent hardware, excellent software support, and of course, brand recognition. The Nokia 3 is one of HMD Global’s lower-end smartphones with a 5.0″ HD screen, 2GB RAM, 2,630mAh battery, and MediaTek’s MT6737 system-on-chip. The phone was released with Android 7.0 Nougat in February of 2017, but it was updated to Android 8.0 Oreo back in April. Now, the device has received yet another major software update, bumping up the version to Android 8.1 Oreo.

Other than the version bump, the update brings the December security patches. The changelog also mentions features like a revamped power menu, new Settings, battery indicator for Bluetooth connected devices, and improved system stability. Even though Android 8.1 Oreo is an almost year-old version of Android, it’s still nice to see smartphones receive updates to it. HMD Global has previously promised that the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6, and Nokia 8 will receive the Android 9 Pie update, so this update should keep Nokia 3 users happy while they wait for the latest dessert release. The build released for Nokia 3, with version number V4.42D, is 1.8GB in size and is rolling out to users now.

HMD Global is setting a good example of providing even the least expensive smartphones in their portfolio with stellar software support. We just wish they would allow for unlocking the bootloader on more devices than just the Nokia 8.
