Huawei has been in the headlines quite a lot lately and December has only just begun. Late last month, we heard about Huawei preparing a smartphone that would have a hole in the top left corner for the camera. This would allow the company to shrink the top bezel of the phone, but it also looks very familiar to what Samsung showed off at SDC 2018 just weeks earlier. There’s a new rumor floating around claiming Huawei is going to announce a smartphone that can take 3D-photos sometime this month. So since we’ve been hearing a lot about the Huawei Nova 4 (the phone with the hole for the camera), some people believe this will be the phone capable of those 3D-photos.
Augmented reality is becoming more and more popular in smartphones these days. The games that have been shown off so far spark the imagination as if we are looking through a window where we can add and manipulate virtual images. Since it’s using the rear-facing camera it can be quite fun to have the Hulk from Marvel or Eleven from Stranger Things interacting with our real-world environment. Huawei seems to have bigger plans as they want to take real objects and let you manipulate them with the smartphone.
If you remember, last month a new application called 3D Live Maker was released for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. It seemed quite similar to Sony’s 3D Creator application from last year but Bloomberg is reporting something different. The phone they are talking about is said to capture 3D images and carries the codename Princeton. The only mention of this codename in relation to Huawei claims to be a phone called the Huawei Honor V20 but there isn’t any mention about it having 3D photo capabilities.
The report says the feature will be called “3D Camera” and it will give the user the ability to “generate 3-D models of themselves and the environment in real-time.” While Huawei and Sony have refused to comment on the report, we do have a quote from Yusuke Toyoda, a sensors analyst at Fuji Chimera Research Inc., who says this “is technology that has never been seen before and, at the extreme, has the potential to change how we view the world.”
Note: Huawei has stopped providing official bootloader unlock codes for its devices. Therefore, the bootloader of this alleged device will not be unlockable, which means that users cannot flash Magisk/TWRP/AOSP-based custom ROMs.
