The holiday season can be a risky time to roll out new features to an app or service. Not only are these holiday seasons hectic enough on their own, but then you add in the crunch time for employees and the bugs that could surface once a bunch of people with free time on their hands start to use them. However, Google feels that Google Map’s new “For You” tab is perfect for the holiday season as it will give you suggestions of places to go which are “tailored to your tastes and preferences.”
As mentioned, this new feature will have a dedicated tab all of its own labeled “For You.” The feature is said to be “a constant source of inspiration” so that you and your family aren’t stuck debating the next place to go visit. Google’s announcement blog post doesn’t give us details about what data they are pulling these “tailored” recommendations from, but it could be anything from your account’s location history, reviews, and even search results. We’ll have to wait and see if Google reveals any additional details about the new “For You” feature in the future.
They do say that you should “follow neighborhoods or places you’re interested” and in return, you will get updates and recommendations. The embedded GIF seems to focus entirely on restaurants, cafes, and other food service spots, but we’re told these types of recommendations aren’t the only thing that will be on display in this new tab within the Google Maps application. Along with restaurant suggestions, the announcement blog post also says that we can expect to see “everything from recent news about an opening or pop up” to “a new menu item” as well.
All of these features are now available in 130+ new countries on Android (and 40 on iOS). If you’re heading out of town this holiday season, Google says the feature “can help you get a jump start on travel planning even before you take off” this holiday season. Look for the new For You tab to be rolling out more widely right now.
