Google has added an intriguing new feature to the latest Canary and Dev builds of Chrome. “Sneak Peek” is a way to preview links in an overlay without leaving your current page. Simply long-press a link and you can choose to open it in a “Sneak Peek” overlay. You’ll need to toggle a Chrome flag to enable it, though it’s a rather simple procedure.
The “Sneak Peek” overlay has almost all of the functionality of a full tab: you can swipe the header up until the preview covers almost all of the current window, scroll up and down within the overlay, and even click on links within the overlay. However, you can’t long-press any links within the overlay and you can’t swipe up to promote the overlay to a full tab. For that, you’ll have to close the overlay by swiping it down quickly or tapping the close button on the top right of the overlay. Then simply long-press on the link again and choose “open” or “open in new tab” as you prefer.
To enable this feature, you can copy and paste the following URL into your address bar: chrome://flags/#enable-ephemeral-tab. Once you enable the flag and relaunch the browser, just go to any web page with links to other pages on it and long-press the link you want to preview. Choose the “Sneak Peek” option on the popup menu and you’ll see the preview in an overlay, as shown in the video above.
In terms of performance, I found it smooth enough on my Pixel 2 XL, though your mileage may vary on older devices as Chrome is notorious for consuming memory like the Tasmanian Devil in those classic Looney Tunes shows.
