Ever since HMD Global acquired the rights to sell smartphones under the Nokia brand, the company has had great success selling a range of budget and mid-range smartphones. What makes their smartphones especially interesting is that they all run near-stock builds of Android, and most are part of the Android One program – meaning they’re guaranteed timely security updates. HMD Global also promised that all of their existing devices will receive the Android Pie update, and it looks like they’re working hard to deliver on that promise as the Nokia 6‘s Android Pie update is nearing release.
We know the Nokia 6’s official Android 9 Pie update is nearing release as a leaked build of an internal beta release has appeared on our forums. XDA Senior Member hikari_calyx posted the firmware with instructions on how to flash the update. There are two methods for flashing the firmware: manually flashing the firmware or forcing the OTA update. Be warned that both methods will erase the internal storage, so be sure to have a backup of your important files. Once you update, the Google Play Store isn’t pre-installed so you have to sideload the APK manually.
If you’re interested in installing this early Android Pie beta release for the Nokia 6, the instructions are linked in the thread below. The technique is quite involved, so I recommend you follow the instructions very carefully. If you would rather wait, we’re sure that HMD Global will roll out an official beta labs release or the stable update in a few weeks.
