Until recently, Dirac was a relatively unknown name. The Swedish audio firm has been working with device makers for years, but we only started hearing a lot about them in 2018. We learned about their technology when we interviewed the General Manager of Mobile at Dirac back in March. Their latest feature for smartphones is called “Dirac Bass.”
We’ve talked about Dirac features in the past. Earlier in the year, they announced Dirac Panorama Sound, which optimizes speakers that are positioned close together. You can find their technology in the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T as well. Their latest addition, Dirac Bass, is a feature that improves bass performance for tiny speakers in smartphones.
Dirac is using a clever trick to achieve this. The tiny speakers in smartphones are simply not able to reproduce deep bass notes. To get around that, Dirac Bass plays a “combination of artificially generated overtones that are several octaves higher.” This tricks the human mind into perceiving the sound as deep bass.
Dirac is set to show off Dirac Bass at CES next month. They did not share information on which phones with be getting the feature. It will only work with Dirac Panorama Sound and Dirac Power Sound.
